For an Advent calendar minus the sugar, how about an Advent word scramble puzzle for each day! We've tried the chocolate calendars but the chocolate never tastes that great and it's tricky when there are multiple children storing their advent calendars in the fridge. Those cute little DIY calendars from the store never seem to be big enough to put a treat in it for more than one child either so our Assistant Director of Pastoral Life and Mission here in the Adelaide Archdiocese has come up with an alternative.... This can be recreated on a white board or with magnet letters on your fridge or letters printed and cut at home. Feel free to substitute advent words to suit your family. Start with a final place to record each word scramble. We used a letter board from Kmart with some extra boxes of letters. Here are the unscrambled Advent words below (don't show the kids!) Each word is then laid out and ONE letter is marked in a significant way to signify its place in the acrostic poem (we coloured one letter in gold) Then place each word in a box or envelope and label it with the date of December. You may even get to use that cute Advent calendar with all the boxes that could never fit enough chocolate!
Each day, the family can unscramble a word and add it to the board. As the words are discovered, the acrostic poem will unfold. We hope for this to be a great way to involve the whole family and ponder on Advent words while having fun with a puzzle. Quick! It's almost December 1st!!
